Cancer Prevention and Early Detection:Taking Action Before Symptoms Appear.
Cancer prevention and early detection are essential components of better long-term health. Although not every cancer can be prevented, certain risk-reduction strategies and appropriate screening can help reduce cancer burden and improve outcomes.
Evidence-based prevention measures include avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, protecting against relevant infections through vaccination, and following recommended screening guidance. HPV vaccination, for example, helps prevent infections that can cause cervical and several other cancers.
Screening recommendations vary according to cancer type, age, family history, previous medical conditions and individual risk. Cervical screening, breast cancer screening and colorectal cancer screening can benefit eligible populations. However, not every available test has been shown to reduce cancer deaths, and unnecessary testing may lead to false-positive results or further investigations.
People should also seek medical assessment for persistent or unexplained symptoms, such as unusual bleeding, a new lump, unexplained weight loss or changes in bowel habits. These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer, but they should not be ignored.
Dr. Brian Wellness Center encourages preventive health assessments, informed screening decisions and timely referral when further investigation is needed.
Key message: Prevention, appropriate screening and early medical evaluation can make a meaningful difference in cancer care.
