Integrative Oncology- Evidence-Based Support Alongside Cancer Treatment.
Integrative oncology combines conventional cancer care with selected supportive therapies that have evidence of benefit. Its purpose is to improve symptoms, well-being and quality of life—not to replace surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or other indicated cancer treatments.
Research and clinical guidelines support certain approaches for specific symptoms. For example, appropriately tailored exercise, mindfulness-based programmes and cognitive behavioural therapy can help manage cancer-related fatigue. Mindfulness-based interventions may also help patients experiencing anxiety or depression. The choice of intervention should reflect the patient’s needs, clinical condition and preferences.
Patients should be cautious with herbal products, high-dose vitamins and other supplements promoted as cancer treatments. Some products may interact with anticancer medicines, affect treatment safety or lack convincing evidence of benefit. Natural does not automatically mean safe.
A responsible integrative oncology plan involves communication between the patient, oncologist and other qualified healthcare professionals. Symptoms, nutritional needs, emotional well-being, physical activity and complementary product use should be reviewed individually.
At Dr. Brian Wellness Center, we support a science-informed, patient-centred approach that considers the whole person while respecting the importance of proven cancer treatments.
Key message: Integrative oncology works best when supportive therapies are selected carefully and coordinated with conventional cancer care.
